This paper examines the link between misinformation and the level of acceptance of the HPV vaccine among mothers and their adolescent girls in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre. It identifies the need to interrogate this subject in the Nigerian context, where the government has rolled out the biggest HPV vaccination campaign in Africa – presenting a unique opportunity to determine the extent to which misinformation might have influenced acceptance of the vaccine. The paper uses a methodology that combines survey of mothers and their school-age daughters and focus group discussions involving mothers, most of whom had been exposed to misinformation about the vaccine. The outcome shows that level of acceptance for both mothers and daughters was below average, and that misinformation had some influence on vaccine acceptance. The paper critiques what this outcome implies for HPV vaccine misinformation and provides insights on ways to combat it.
